15 days itinerary in Mauritius

First day itinerary in Mauritius

Before going through our itinerary, we want to inform you that we always travel with our insurance from HeyMondo. If you buy travel insurance from this link, you will have 5% discount. They have multiple plans, but we always choose the annual plan because we are frequent travellers.

  1. Landing in Mauritius
  2. Buy a local SIM card for €15 (200GB plus voice)
  3. Withdraw 3000 rupees (€60) with no fees from Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB), State Bank of Mauritius (SBM), or Bank of Baroda
  4. Pick up the rented car at the airport from R3 Cars, the best car rental company
  5. Drive at night, on the left side of narrow roads for 55 km, around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

We rented a Nissan March and paid €375 for 15 days, which is €25/day. We can’t recommend enough this car rental company. Read the reviews on Google Maps, and you will convince yourself.

Second day itinerary in Mauritius

  1. Chamarel viewpoint
  2. Grand Basin
  3. Tookay Temple
  4. Roche Qui Pleure
  5. Gris Gris Beach
  6. Rochester Falls
  7. Maconde viewpoint
  8. Sunset on Le Morne Beach

This route is 100 km long, and we visited most of the things we planned, although it rained. In Mauritius, you’ll drive on the left, like in the UK, and the roads are good, but sometimes narrow.

Third day itinerary in Mauritius

  1. Climb Le Morne Brabant Mountain

We decided to climb Le Morne Mountain, a must-have hike in Mauritius. It was not an easy one, but we wanted to do it. The first part is very easy, a nice walk through the forest. The fun part begins after this. From an almost flat climb, it begins an almost vertical climb with really difficult parts, but it is doable if you are in good physical condition. There are 3.5 km until the cross, and in one and a half hours, you’re there, with a total elevation of about 600 m.

4th and 5th day itinerary in Mauritius

  1. The Mangroves Peninsula (day 4)
  2. Chamarel Waterfall (day 5)
  3. Seven Colored Earth (day 5)
  4. Transfer to Flic-en-Flac (day 5)
  5. Sunset on Flic-en-Flac Beach

On the fourth day, it rained all day, and we could visit only the Mangroves Peninsula, where we found a kitten and stayed with him all day.

The fifth day, we started as usual, with a coffee at @drinkkindcoffee. After this, we went to Seven Coloured Earth. The ticket is 600 MUR (€12) per person, and there is a coffee plantation, Chamarel waterfall, Seven Coloured Earth, and some giant tortoises brought to Mauritius from Seychelles. After that, we went to make the checkout in La Gaulette, and we headed to our next stop for 3 days in Mauritius, Flic-en-Flac, a resort on the west side of the island.

6th, 7th, and 8th day itinerary in Mauritius

  1. Enjoyed the beach at Flic-en-Flac
  2. Trou aux Cerfs Volcano
  3. Tamarin Bay

We drank specialty coffee at Jiva Coffee and Roastery and at Coffee Shore, both of them in Tamarin.

We saw very beautiful sunsets on Flic-en-Flac Beach with very clear rays of the sun.

7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th day itinerary in Mauritius

  1. Pamplemousse Botanical Garden, Mon Choisy Beach (day 8)
  2. Trou aux Biches Beach (day 9)
  3. Cap Malhereux (day 10)
  4. Pereybere Beach, La Cuvette Beach, Grand Baie Beach (day 10)
  5. The capital city, Port Louis (day 11)
  6. Pereybere Beach, Trou aux Biches Beach (day 12)

From Flic-en-Flac, we transferred on the eighth day to Trou aux Biches, on the northern side of the island, where we stayed 5 days, and where we liked the most! We discovered a specialty coffee shop, Passion Coffee Shop, which added a plus to our stay. On the way to Trou aux Biches, we stopped at Pamplemousse Botanical Garden, a must-see if you are in Mauritius. The entrance fee was 300 MUR, less than €6. We stayed mostly on different beaches, but we visited Cap Malheureux and the capital city, Port Louis, where we found the true Mauritian vibe.

So, a day in Port Louis is a must-do. We went to the Citadel, where we parked the car for free all day, and from here we headed to St. Louis Cathedral, Port Louis Theater, Chinatown, Jummah Mosque, the Government House, Les Jardins de la Compagnie, the Natural History Museum, Central Market, Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage site, the Caudan Waterfront, and the Lenin statue bust (why they have this in Port Louis?)

13th, 14th, 15th, 16th day itinerary in Mauritius

  • 1. Point aux Cannoniers and Eden Beach in Grand Baie (day 13)
  • 2. Drive on the island from Trou aux Biches to Trou d’Eau Douce (day 13)
  • 3. Trou d’Eau Douce Beach and Trou d’Eau Douce Church (day 13)
  • 4. GRSE Waterfall (day 14)
  • 5. Mahébourg, the former capital (day 14)
  • 6. La Cambuse Beach (day 14)
  • 7. Blue Bay Beach (day
  • 8. lle aux Cerfs (day 15)
  • 9. Belle Mare Beach (day 16)
  • 10. Palmar Beach (day 16)
  • 11. Drive to the airport (day 76)

From Trou aux Biches (North side), we drove to Trou d’Eau Douce (East side) for 45 km (about 1 hour), with a stop at Tariq Snack in Triolet to eat. Trou d’Eau Douce is less touristy, but it’s a good stop to see all the Eastern coast of Mauritius, which is very different than the rest of the island, and it’s the closest point to go to Île aux Cerfs by boat. It’s just €9 and you get a sunbed and a welcome juice on the island. Search on Google Maps for Pointe Maurice, and from there, you will get the boat. Read the reviews because they explain to you how to get there. The other ferry companies charge you twice as much, and you don’t have anything included.

Mahébourg, the former capital, is located in the southeast of the island, and it’s the closest city to the airport. We visited La Cambuse Beach, Blue Bay Beach, Mahébourg Museum, the waterfront, the central market, Pointe Canon, and other nice places. Mahébourg has a nice local vibe, with few tourists, but we’ve seen more than in Trou d’Eau Douce.

From Trou d’Eau Douce to the airport is a 1-hour drive. We had lunch at Indian Saveurs and it was delicious. We saw a beautiful sunset over the city.
